The Truth Will Set You Free

“Remember you have your girls that need you.”

Often said trying to motivate someone to not fall into grief and stay there, to treasure what they still have after a loss or to bring some perspective to a dark and painful situation.

The truth is, the loss of Jonathan made my job as mother to my 2 girls even more important to me, it magnified that I was not promised tomorrow and to evaluate what I was doing to impact their eternity.

What was I teaching them by example, what Biblical truth was I searching out for them to learn that was being undermined in their everyday? Was I preparing them to live in a world of lies, was I fulfilling my job as a Christian parent or was I throwing my children to the wolves to be devoured?

We cannot guarantee our children’s salvation, no matter what they see portrayed or are taught, but it is my responsibility to teach them in the truth of God’s word, equip them with the full armor of God and pray that the Holy Spirit will open their eyes to see, their ears to hear and turn their hearts from a heart of stone to a heart of flesh; receiving Jesus as their Lord and Savior. (Jeremiah 31:33, Hebrews 8:10)

Most Important

Truth is extremely evasive in our society at the moment.

Facts that a society needs to function and thrive are being dictated by feelings. Feelings are fleeting and ever changing, facts do not change.

#1 most important truth is WHO IS GOD ✅

Who is the creator of the universe, what are his attributes, how has His-story unfolded over the last 2000+ years, how is he the same yesterday, today and forever?

#2 most important truth is WHO AM I ✅

Who am I according to God’s great story, what is my purpose on this earth, how do I walk out that purpose and what great gift has my Heavenly Father so graciously offered to me?

#3 APPLICATION of God’s truth in my everyday life, with my peers, in my view of the world around me and how to use truth to decipher the lies. ✅

If we don’t first learn truth, we will accept any lie presented to us.

Our job as parents is to teach our children truth. It is one of our greatest responsibilities.

So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32

Resources

  • A great free resource is the Hoopla digital app . Audio & ebooks, movies and music are all free by entering a public library card subscription. It is a great way to preview books before buying them or listen as you do chores, ride in the car or exercise. (I will be linking below to these, if available)

  • For physical books, of course Amazon and Barnes and Noble has most books. Thrift books and Christianbooks.com are also great resources.

  • And as always, your local small bookstore owners will cherish your business.

Books

Ok, now to the meat of the matter, I will be addressing WHO IS GOD and WHO AM I in this article, be on the lookout for part 2 -- Application and deep dive material!

* Just a note - these books are supplemental to God’s Word, the Bible -- THE FOUNDATION OF ALL TRUTH!

WHO IS GOD

This book will help you prioritize your Christian growth—pointing you to the resources God has given you in his Word, in prayer, and in the church; offering help for managing your emotions, watching your words, and bearing spiritual fruit; and challenging you with ways to center your life around this important task.

It’s for teenagers eager to reject the status quo and low standards our culture sets for us. It’s for those of us who don’t want to spend the adolescent years slacking off, but rather standing out and digging deep into what Jesus says about following him. This book will help you see how the truth about God changes everything—our relationships, our time, our sin, our habits, and more—freeing us to live joyful, obedient, and Christ-exalting lives, even while we’re young.

Every time the Christmas season comes around, we look forward to putting up a tree, giving and receiving gifts, and participating in other traditions that make this wonderful time of year so special. But sometimes the most significant aspect of the season-remembering and focusing on the coming of Jesus-grows old and familiar. Paul Tripp seeks to recapture our attention and reawaken our awe during Christmastime.

WHO AM I

We're told that the key to happiness is self-love. Instagram influencers, mommy bloggers, self-help gurus, and even Christian teachers promise that if we learn to love ourselves, we'll be successful, secure, and complete.

The truth is we can't find satisfaction inside ourselves because we are the problem. We struggle with feelings of inadequacy because we are inadequate. Alone, we are not good enough, smart enough, or beautiful enough. We're not enough--period. And that's okay, because God is.

The answer to our insufficiency and insecurity isn't self-love, but God's love.

With the church silent on the topic of sex, thousands of Christian young women learn about sex from the pages of Cosmopolitan Magazine: the only place that frankly explains what sex actually is. Unsure what is biblical and what is cultural, these girls come to dating and marriage misunderstanding their own sexuality. No one ever taught them about sex from God's perspective. Christian Cosmo is the sex talk many girls never get. Rather than learn about sex from the culture, Christian Cosmo answers sexual questions from a Scriptural standpoint. By reframing sex for the single girl, we lay the foundation for God-honoring marriages and end the stigma on female sexuality.
